Katia Ekesi

Katia Ekesi was born on the 3rd November 1942 to Anthonio and Velia Silvagni at Viggiano, within Potenza province in Italy. She is the heir of a family of professional practitioners, physicians and lawyers and soon followed her father steps enrolling in the Law School of the University of Rome.

She graduated in 1970 at the University of Milan where she earlier transferred following her husband, Engr. Dominic Ekesi a young and promising Nigerian fellow, recently graduated at the faculty of engineering “San Pietro in Vincoli” in Rome and was working in that city at that time. Notwithstanding her busy life as student and wife she had also time to give birth to three children, Christiana Akubunachi, Roberto Chidobe & Massimiliano Emeka.

Since the year 1972, Katia and Dominic lived in Lagos, NIGERIA. In this city, the couple excelled as industrialist in the field of furniture production and distribution through their incorporated company BETTER LIVING LIMITED.

Aware of her role vis-à-vis her husband and his community of origin she embarked on an intense work to enhance the living condition of the citizen of Abatete in Anambra State, the supply of electricity to the construction of a social Centre. More recently she also assisted the Abatete community in an agricultural scheme meant to improve through the utilization of new species, supplied by the International Agricultural institute of Ibadan, the cultivation of plantain-banana and cassava improved species.

Katia, a fervent Roman Catholic, soon focused her natural attitude for the charitable activities on the co-operation with the Roman Catholic Church and the Missionary Institution in Nigeria.

She largely contributed to the inception and implementation of a secondary school managed and assisted by the Reverent Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, a Dominican Order Based in Rome, Italy. With the combined effort of her friends, She awards every year 50 scholarships to the more brilliant but unprivileged students from Abatete. The Local traditional ruler HRM the Igwe of Abatete P.U. Mkpune Edeogu 1st acknowledging her contributions made for the advancement of the community conferred on her the title of Ugoma Abatete on the 29th December, 1994.
